| | New Coach? Miles, Ferentz, who?!?! | | Since the retirement of Lloyd Carr, there has been much speculation on the new coaching position. Many college football coaches see the Michigan job as one of the premier positions in the country. For the first time in 40 years, the coaching position is clearly open with many possible candidates. The clear front runner is LSU's head coach, Les Miles, who is a truly Michigan man. Met his wife at Michigan, played under Bo Schembechler at Michigan, coached at Michigan. I digress, obviously all those reasons are why he is the clear front runner. The next group of coaches all follow Miles. This group includes, Kirk Ferentz of Iowa, Jon Gruden of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and an obvious sleeper, Brian Kelly of Cincinnati. There will be at least a few weeks before the head coaching position at Michigan will be resolved. But who is the best candidate for the job? Who will live up to the foundation that Bo and Lloyd Carr built? And most importantly, who will bring the National Championship back to Ann Arbor? Any thoughts? | |

| | Cowboys release K Vanderjagt | |
November 27, 2006
IRVING, Texas (Ticker) - Mike Vanderjagt may be the most accurate kicker in NFL history, but he was making Bill Parcells plenty nervous. The Dallas Cowboys on Monday released Vanderjagt, who has converted 13-of-18 field goals this season. ESPN and the NFL Network is reporting that Dallas will sign Martin Gramatica to replace Vanderjagt.
Along with missing five field goal attempts, including two against the Indianapolis Colts in a 21-14 win on November 19, Vanderjagt has also been weak on kickoffs. Parcells, the Cowboys coach, admitted last week that he was "concerned" with Vanderjagt. The 36-year-old Vanderjagt made 217-of-248 field-goal attempts (87.5 percent) in his eight-year career with the Indianapolis Colts before signing with Dallas last March. Last season, Vanderjagt made 23-of-25 field goals. However, Vanderjagt did not come through when the Colts needed him most, missing a 46-yard attempt with 17 seconds left in a 21-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional playoffs in January. Gramatica played for the Colts this season when Adam Vinatieri was sidelined with a groin injury. Gramatica is the Tampa Bay...

| | Glazers see firsthand at Manchester United that history wins nothing | | Overcoming a poor history can be tough in sports. Keeping a strong team consistently on top might be even harder. Malcolm Glazer and his sons pushed aside a history of franchise mediocrity when their Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the 2003 Super Bowl, a first in the team's 30-year history.
But on Sunday, Joel and Bryan Glazer got a firsthand look at how hard it will be for their Manchester United team to recapture the English soccer league title in a competition it had dominated before they came along. This lesson: History doesn't win anything. Glazer put his sons on the board of directors to run the finances of United -- one of the most famous soccer clubs in the world -- after buying up most of the shares last year. He then took the club off the stock market, angering many United fans by borrowing money to purchase the Red Devils and effectively put a profitable club heavily into debt. Thousands of anti-Glazer fans still boycott games, but the 76,000-capacity Old Trafford sells out week after week. The Glazers rarely set foot in England, however, conducting board meetings with the club's other directors by trans-Atlantic video link. Sunday's 1-1 tie...

| | Bears can clinch division title in Week 12 | |
BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - The Chicago Bears can clinch their second straight division title on Sunday. Tom Brady and the New England Patriots know all about winning divisions. The interconference battle between the Bears (9-1) and Patriots (7-3) is the marquee matchup of Week 12 in the NFL.
The Sunday night meeting between the Indianapolis Colts (9-1) and Philadelphia Eagles (5-5) was supposed to be another intriguing interconference game featuring quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Donovan McNabb. But the contest lost much of its luster when McNabb suffered a season-ending knee injury last week. The Bears can become only the fourth team since the advent of the 16-game schedule in 1978 to clinch a division title by its 11th game. The other three are the 1985 Bears, the 1997 San Francisco 49ers and 2004 Eagles. Chicago can seal the NFC North crown with a win at New England, coupled with losses by the Minnesota Vikings (4-6) and Green Bay Packers (4-6). The Vikings host former coach Dennis Green and the Arizona Cardinals (2-8) on Sunday and the Packers visit the first-place Seattle Seahawks (6-4) on Monday night. But beating the Pats will be...
